In our increasingly interconnected digital world data communication is the vital ingredient that connects us. Understanding how different methods of data transmission function is essential to constructing reliable and efficient networks. Different methods determine the way data is transmitted.

Hardware in a data communication circuit will use different techniques to efficiently transfer data. These include multiplexing and desmultiplexing. These are processes that combine or separate signals, and then transmit them as a single combined signal. This increases bandwidth and decreases costs. Signal amplifiers and error-detecting algorithms minimize data corruption caused by electrical or electromagnetic disturbances.

Data communications also contain the following set (protocol) of rules that are adhered to by both the computers of the sender as well as the receiver. These rules help ensure that the message is understood and accepted without error.

The sender is the computer or device that generates and transmits the message, which may be in the form of text, numbers images, sound, or video. The computer or device that receives the message could be different from the one that sent it. The transmission medium is a physical route that connects the sender and receiver. It can be wired, like the twisted-pair wire, or fiber optic cable, or wireless, like radio waves or lasers.
